These blends have been carefully formulated and mathematically modeled to tailor their characteristics to match certain properties of the refrigerants they are replacing and to provide maximum system efficiency and performance. In the past, refrigerant blends have been based on chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. However, because of ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) regulations, most of today’s refrigerant blends are HFC-based and have zero ODP with small GWP impacts to the environment. Chemours breaks ground in China on first full-scale plant for new HFO refrigerant
Plant for chiller and Organic Rankine Cycle refrigerant HFO1336mzz to begin production in 2017 in Changshu, China The Chemours Company and its partner Changshu 3F Zhonghao have broken ground on the world’s first full-scale production facility for HFO-1336mzz . This site, expected to begin production mid-year 2017, will provide increased capacity of low global warming potential (GWP) foam expansion agents and refrigerants. The primary initial use of the HFO will be as a foam expansion agents, but with a GWP of less than two, Chemours is developing it for refrigerant applications, thanks to its non-flammability, high efficiency and thermal stability. AHRI to provide progress report on pledge to invest $5 billion in research over the next 10 years for new refrigerants and HVACR equipment. At a White House Industry Leader Roundtable today, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) will provide a progress report on its 2014 pledge to invest $5 billion in research over the next 10 years for new refrigerants and HVACR equipment to support energy efficiency. During the event, AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurek reported that the industry spent more than $255 million in 2015 toward a 10-year, $5 billion commitment in research and development (R&D) and capital expenditures to develop and commercialize low-global warming potential (GWP) technologies, demonstrating the industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Survey finds 80% of UK ammonia refrigeration fails to meet dangerous substances standards
A survey of over 100 ammonia refrigeration systems operating in food manufacturing facilities in the UK found that under 20% met legislation covering dangerous and explosive materials. The survey by consultant Stephen Gill Associates revealed that 30% of sites had either no risk assessment or inadequate ones for their ammonia refrigeration systems. Principal Stephen Gill said: “Unfortunately, lack of understanding of the requirements is no excuse for lack of action in the eyes of the HSE, and indeed the insurance companies.” The ATEX 137 Directive on explosive substances requires that all companies operating with areas, (including those containing ammonia refrigeration plant), classified as ‘Hazardous’ classify their production areas into zones and assess the risks both to their employees and their plant assets.
