Commercial Refrigeration Equipment Market to Surge to $61.44 Billion by 2021
The global commercial refrigeration equipment market was valued at $36.63 billion in 2015, and is expected to generate revenue of $61.44 billion by the end of 2021, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of slightly over 9 percent between 2016 and 2021, according to a report from Zion Market Research. The report notes that commercial refrigeration equipment is mainly used for food and beverage storage and merchandising purposes by the food wholesale industry, such as supermarkets, specialty food stores, grocery stores, and convenience stores. It is also used in restaurants and cafeterias. Some of the different types of commercial refrigeration units include reach-in refrigerators and freezers, walk-in refrigerators and freezers, undercounter refrigerators, refrigerated merchandisers, and bar refrigeration. The global commercial refrigeration equipment market is being primarily driven by the rising number of hypermarkets, specia […]

A place in the sun for solar cooling
In April various world-leading experts on solar cooling technology gathered in Australia to give insight on the future of the technology, says Matthew Dillon Held in April at the University of Wollongong, AIRAH’s innovative Solar Heating and Cooling Workshop stoked the interest, ideas and debate surrounding the emerging technology. AIRAH CEO Phil Wilkinson, F.AIRAH said: “This workshop was an extremely valuable opportunity to share experiences among some of the brave and brilliant pioneers of this new world of low-grid-demand mechanical building services technologies. Nothing makes more sense than a technology that converts the rays of the sun directly into cooling. It’s only going to become more important as the planet seeks to lower its emissions. Solar heating and cooling will definitely be part of the solution.” Keynote speaker Dr Stephen White, F.AIRAH, set the context for the day, providing an overview of solar cooling trends, dri […]

Cooling and heating at heart of strategy for Europe’s energy future
The European Commission’s groundbreaking strategy to tackle the vast use of energy in the cooling and heating sector across the continent The strategy includes plans to boost the energy efficiency of buildings, improve linkages between electricity systems and district heating systems, which aims to greatly increase the use of renewable energy, and encourage reuse of waste heat and cold generated by industry. Long-term, Europe wants to decarbonise its building stock by 2050. It is estimated that industry could reduce its energy consumption by 4 to 5 per cent in 2030 and 8 to 10 per cent in 2050 just by implementing commercially viable and available solutions. The share of renewable energies would reach 30 per cent and breakthrough technologies would help industries to decarbonise while making production processes 30 to 50 per cent less energy intensive. Key to this is a series of mandates for current and future building stock, including […]

EPEE welcomes European heating and cooling strategy
The European Partnership for Energy and the Environment has welcomed the European Commission’s first ever comprehensive Strategy dedicated to heating and cooling. The European Commission has presented the first strategy to optimise buildings’ and industries’ heating and cooling, a sector accounting for 50% of the EU’s annual energy consumption. Andrea Voigt, Director-General of EPEE, said: ”This Strategy is a welcome boost for our industry,” said Andrea Voigt, Director-General of EPEE. “As heating and cooling forms a major part of Europe’s energy consumption, it makes sense for there to be a strong focus on this sector, and this Strategy is therefore long overdue.” In a statement, EPEE said: ”The Strategy contains many positive elements, such as advocating for a technology-neutral approach, asserting that the consumer should be at the heart of this Strategy, and highlighting the need for attractive financing to properly renovate buildi […]

London construction costs highest in Europe and second highest in the world, says study
London has the highest construction costs in Europe and the second highest in the world, a new study has revealed. According to Construction News, the findings from Arcadis’ annual International Construction Costs Index report show the cost of building in the capital in 2015 was on average 20 per cent higher than in Paris. London was also found to be the second most expensive city for construction in the world, behind only New York among the 44 cities analysed. According to the study, London faced severe market imbalance in construction, with a combination of limited bidding resource and supplier opportunism contributing to cost increases. This led to spiralling cost inflation, threatening the viability of London’s commercial and public sector schemes, according to Arcadis, and challenging its ability to respond to growth opportunities. The study found that rapid rises in labour costs and overheads had made it difficult for contractors […]

French Alps in need of Christmas snow dump
France’s warmer than usual temperatures this December are bad news for skiers but snow cannons could still provide joy in some areas over the Christmas period. While plenty of people have delighted in France’s mild autumn, ski resort owners and slope lovers alike are stamping their feet with frustration. And there’s no snow forecast before Christmas either – news which is unlikely to please people flying in to the French slopes over the coming days. In fact, the only half-way decent snow conditions to date this season arrived in November and even that colder spell left the southern Alps and Corsica bereft of the sort of snow skiers long for. In the northern Alps, meanwhile, snow conditions are described as “weak” or “very weak”. In some places, however, artificial snow will allow resorts to offer a modicum of relief. That’s the case at the L’Alpe d’Huez station in the Alps, where 30 of a total 130 pistes are now […]

The Professor: The Art and Science of Creating Refrigerant Blends
Each component brings its own characteristics to the final mixture Refrigerant blends are mixtures of refrigerants. These blends have been carefully formulated and mathematically modeled to tailor their characteristics to match certain properties of the refrigerants they are replacing and to provide maximum system efficiency and performance. In the past, refrigerant blends have been based on chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. However, because of ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) regulations, most of today’s refrigerant blends are HFC-based and have zero ODP with small GWP impacts to the environment. Even though most of today’s blends are HFC-based, they can sometimes contain a small percentage of a hydrocarbon (HC) as a refrigerant. The HC, however, will not make the blend flammable because it only constitutes a small percentage (usu […]

How to Invent Our Way Out of Climate Change
If internal combustion was the monumental technological achievement that, over the decades, contributed to climate change, perhaps new technologies can help solve the crisis. The Paris climate talks are crucial not only for forging a political agreement to reduce carbon emissions, but for fostering a political environment that encourages green technology and innovation. U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, speaking in November at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, stressed that encouraging climate innovation was an essential component of success. “We are advancing the theme that energy technology innovation, and the resultant cost reductions in energy technology, are ultimately the key to meeting our climate challenges,” Moniz said. Innovation is not a silver bullet, however. “Neither better technology, nor changing to low-carbon behavior will be sufficient on its own; both will be necessary,” Gregory Nemet, a professor o […]

Chemours breaks ground in China on first full-scale plant for new HFO refrigerant
Plant for chiller and Organic Rankine Cycle refrigerant HFO1336mzz to begin production in 2017 in Changshu, China The Chemours Company and its partner Changshu 3F Zhonghao have broken ground on the world’s first full-scale production facility for HFO-1336mzz . This site, expected to begin production mid-year 2017, will provide increased capacity of low global warming potential (GWP) foam expansion agents and refrigerants. The primary initial use of the HFO will be as a foam expansion agents, but with a GWP of less than two, Chemours is developing it for refrigerant applications, thanks to its non-flammability, high efficiency and thermal stability. Chemours said it is actively developing several new refrigerant fluids based on HFO-1336mzz technology for a variety of applications, including traditional chiller systems and the emerging arena of waste heat recovery using technologies such as high temperature heat pumps and organic rankine […]
